in for a penny, in for a pound

greetings from azofra!  i am in a tiny little town about 6 km past najera.  i walked just ofer 20 km today, leaving  navarette at 7 am and arriving at 1 pm.  what a beautiful walk!  it was almost all on earthen paths instead of by the road the way it sometimes is.  it was only walking through najera that was on stone and/or roadway, and the final approach into azofra.  much easier on the legs and feet.  as usual, i am icing my knees, and i grabbed the computer before others get here and there may be a wait.

today is a big holiday in spain (and france, too, i hear) - the first of may.  it sounds like it is similar to our labor day; it is a holiday for the working people.  we were told to be sure to get food for our trip since the usual cafes, supermercados, etc. might be closed for the day.  so i went shopping yesterday to buy last night´s dinner and today´s lunch and possibly dinner.  i really didn´t feel like cooking (there was a kitchen available for the pilgrims at the albergue, which is quite common) so i went in search of sandwich fixings.  if i were at home, i would probably look for either tofu, tofu bologna, non-dairy cheese or possibly tuna.  here what did i get?  well, i knew it would be meat of some sort, so as i stood at the counter, my eyes fell on the holy grail of the forbidden substance for vegetarians...mortadella!  so  for last night´s sandwich: mortadella and local cheese and for today´s sandwich, salami and cheese.  in or a penny, in for a pound, as they say.  there has been no problem with eating since i´ve been here, and almost every day i have a sandwich involving some sort of meat.  it is interesting noticing people´s attitudes towards meat here, since it is a much more agricultural society.   i remember the taxi ride from roncesvalles to st. jean pied de port getting to the start of my camino.  the driver was speaking to the woman in the front seat in spanish and i was able to follow the conversation, jsut a beat behind.  we passed some sheep and she exclaimed how cute they were, to which the driver agreed .  after a moment of silence he added, they are also good meat, and taste very good.  it made me laugh out loud!
anyway, my time is up for now, i will post again if i can-
much love to all.
peace and blessings-
a

Ah, flexibilitiy - a wonderful characteristic to have. You walking along paths makes me think of Little Red Riding Hood - not the wolf part - just the part about walking serenly through the forest. I hope the filming is going well. We love reading your blogs. Short but sweet. Much Love, Y/M&D

Nice to hear about all your companions on the camino. Two weeks over already! Nothing much going on at home. Today we received a postcard you sent from France before you even began your walk. We look forward eagerly each day to hearing from you. In some ways it seems as though you are away at a lovely international summer camp. No counselors, but plenty of other campers, all sharing bunk beds and stories, and making lanyards. Much love, YM&D
